The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is a government scheme that awards compensation to persons who have been the victim of serious physical or mental injuries through a criminal act in England, Scotland or Wales. The CICA does not award any injury compensation to a British citizen who has incurred injuries abroad.

There is a set scale of awards based on 25 levels; those who qualify for level 1 would be awarded £1000 up to level 25 where the potential award is a maximum of £250,000. The CICA has very clear guidelines with set criteria to qualify for the award; CICA injury claims can only be made within 2 years of the criminal act happening, (claims made outside of this period might be accepted if the circumstances are proven to be reasonable), your injuries must have lasted for at least 6 weeks and involved at least 2 visits to a medical practitioner, the incident should have been reported at the earliest opportunity.
In certain circumstances compensation may be awarded for loss of earnings both past and in the future caused by such a crime and also for bereavement as the result of such an incident. In some cases this may be for the loss of earnings for the person who has been killed. Loss of earnings can only be claimed after the first 28 weeks, for those in a higher wage bracket the award is capped.
